The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that three C-130 cargo planes belonging to the US military delivered humanitarian aid by air to Gaza today.
The operation, carried out in cooperation with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, took place between 15:00 and 17:00. The United States airdropped onto Gaza's coastline contained about 38,000 meals of food.
“This air assistance is part of ongoing efforts to deliver more aid to Gaza, including expanding the flow of aid through land corridors and routes,” CENTCOM said in a statement.
United Nations (UN) officials say at least a quarter of Gaza's 2.3 million people are facing severe hunger. They emphasize that airborne aid is not an effective method of aid distribution, but it is a measure that can be resorted to as a last resort.
Jordan and Egypt have previously tried to deliver humanitarian aid by air to Gaza because Israel does not allow ground humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.
On the other hand, 116 people were killed and more than 760 injured in an Israeli army attack on Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza City on February 29.
The government in Gaza stressed that Israel's attack on those awaiting humanitarian aid was “deliberate and planned” and said: “The occupation army knew they were coming to the area for humanitarian aid, but killed them in cold blood.”
The US humanitarian operation in Gaza is seen as a result of international pressure following the Israeli attack. But UN officials stress that Israel must open land corridors to get more aid into Gaza.
