Overview and History

Incheon International Airport commenced operations in 2001 to accommodate South Korea's burgeoning international air traffic. The surge in international travel following the 1988 Summer Olympics had rendered Gimpo International Airport insufficient. Construction commenced in 1992, and the airport opened its doors in 2001 after an eight-year construction period.

Runway Features and Capacity

The airport boasts four runways, the longest of which measures 4,000 meters (approximately 13,123 feet) in length and 60 meters in width, with an asphalt surface. As of 2019, the airport handled over 71 million passengers, 404,104 flights, and 2,764,369 tons of cargo annually.

Transportation and Access

Incheon International Airport is situated approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from downtown Seoul. Several transportation options are available for reaching Seoul:

  • Airport Rail Express (AREX): A high-speed railway line connecting the airport to Seoul Station, offering a 43-minute journey to the city center.
  • Bus and Taxi Options: Regular bus and taxi services are also available from the airport to Seoul.
